It’s perfectly normal for puppies not to sleep through the entire night at first. At 8 weeks old, most puppies still have a lot of growing to do, and they don’t have the bladder control or stamina to make it through a full night of sleep without waking up.
Here’s what to expect and what you can do…
Why Puppies Don’t Sleep Through the Night Yet
- Small Bladders- Puppies have small bladders that require frequent trips outside to relieve themselves, sometimes even during the night.
- Feeding Schedule- If they’re still on a puppy food feeding schedule (which is more frequent than adult dogs), they may need to wake up hungry.
- Separation Anxiety- Puppies may miss their littermates and mother, which can make nighttime challenging and lead to crying.
- Adjusting to New Surroundings- Being in a new home can be a bit scary at first, so they might need reassurance from you.
When Do Puppies Sleep Through the Night?
- Most puppies start to sleep through the night around 12 to 16 weeks of age, but some may take longer.
- As they mature and their bladder capacity increases, they will be able to hold it longer and eventually sleep through the night without needing a bathroom break.
What Can You Do to Encourage Better Sleep?
- Establish a Bedtime Routine
Having a consistent bedtime routine—like a bathroom break, some quiet play or cuddling, and a calm environment—can help your puppy settle in for sleep. - Set Up a Comfortable Sleeping Space
Make the crate or sleeping area comfortable, but not too large. This creates a sense of security, helping your puppy settle more easily. - Limit Food and Water Before Bedtime
Try taking away their water a few hours before bed to help reduce the need for nighttime potty breaks. Similarly, avoid feeding them right before bed. - Nighttime Potty Break
Until your puppy can hold their bladder, be prepared for a bathroom break in the middle of the night. As they get older, you’ll gradually be able to phase this out. - Crate Training and Comfort
If they’re in a crate, placing the crate near you at first can help reduce anxiety, as they’ll feel close to you. You can slowly move the crate farther away as they get used to the routine.
Be Patient
Puppy sleep patterns will improve over time with consistency and training. While it can be tiring, the phase where puppies wake up frequently at night is temporary. As they grow older and their body adjusts, they’ll sleep longer, and soon enough, you’ll both be getting restful sleep through the night.
